Blessing Bags and Coffee

Let me start by updating you on my 40 Random Acts of Kindness before my 40th BD!  I’m just so super excited about this.  I love helping others, but what has really made this worth while is showing Mr. T that you can change the world, one small act at a time.  As I’ve mentioned before, several of the items are low or no cost, because I wanted to drive home the point to everyone that you don’t have to have a lot of money to make a big different in someone else’s life! You can see the full list here.

Today we dropped off a case of water at the local fire station.  This is the Fire Department that responded when mom and dad’s house caught fire when I was 7 mo pregnant and was storing all of my stuff at their place. So, they have a special place in my heart.  We ended up just leaving the case of water at the front door, as I couldn’t get in and didn’t want to go wandering through the fire house! But, Mr. T enjoyed it – he felt good leaving them a surprise!

If you took time to read the list, you’ll see that I crossed out “make a care package and drop it off at a homeless shelter” and made a note that I changed this to Blessing Bags.  If you don’t know about Blessing Bags, they are pretty awesome!  The goal is to make a little bags to keep in your car to hand out when you see a homeless person, sometimes I’m just not comfortable handing out money, so this is a great alternative.  These bags are all over Pinterest if you are interested, (and you can follow me by clicking on the link to the right!)

I read through some of the ideas and then headed out.  I did my grocery shopping with my handy dandy calculator on my phone and discovered that I was going to come out $30 under budget… so it was time to start! I bought what I could at the grocery story and then headed to the Dollar Store to fill in the gaps!

blessing bagsI grabbed brown paper bags and a case of water.  Then I grabbed:

  • Kleenex,
  • moist wipes,
  • lip balm,
  • snack crackers,
  • granola bars,
  • toothbrushes and paste,
  • combs and
  • band-aids.

I put out a call on Facebook that I was putting these together and taking donations of supplies and my mom responded almost immediately.  I picked up a big bag of sample size shampoo’s and lotion’s (Read: gathered up from all of the hotels she and dad has stayed at!) and I get to add those to the bags as well!  I’ll get the first 20 bags put together and these will go with Mr. T and his youth group at church the next time they go downtown to distribute food to the homeless.  I’m pretty excited.  Due to my mom’s donation, for about $2 each, these bags should be full of items to help someone out.  There is food and water to feed their insides.  There will be lip balm and wipes to take care of their outsides.  I have found a bible verse to put on a gift tag to help feed their soul.  I think that covers the basics.  And, hopefully, they will be appreciated and something that will last longer than cans of food.

Anyway, I’m pretty darn excited about it! I’ll keep a couple in my car to hand out, too.

Lastly, let me address the coffee part, since it is part of the title of the blog!

My Keurig broke several days ago.  I spent time trouble shooting it on Google, I called and spent 30 minutes on the phone with Keurig customer support and they finally let me know that it was not fixable.  Ugh.  They did offer me a “discount” on a new unit.

Well, after a little more time on Google and varies on-line retail shops, I discovered that their “discount” could easily be beat!  And, not only could their discount be beat, but I could get a different color…

purple keurigHello lovely!  Let me tell you – this beautiful purple joy was worth suffering through 3 days of decaf coffee!

I like the idea of gestures of kindness to others, especially getting others involved in putting them together, donating items, and teaching kids to look for ways to help others too.

    • My goal is to make it to a warehouse club before we start handing these out and pick up some individual packets of Tylenol or Advil to include. I read somewhere, imagine having a headache and not being able to take something for it? That one really hit me hard!

I thought about the “treat” portion, and started to do chocolates, but ended up with peppermints instead. I figure through the months and with all of the great suggestions, I’ll end up picking up different things as I go along! I’m just really excited to have these to hand out!

The blessing bags are an awesome way to give back. Im not always in a charitable mood, but sometimes when ive done my groceries and am packing them away in my car, often someone would come and beg and once in a while i would ask them to please wait in the car while i go back in store. I am also not really comfortable giving money away as the chances are they would use it for drugs or alcohol, but everyone needs food right? so i’ll buy a bag full of things and always include a special treat, like a small bar of chocolate. Everyone deserves a treat once in a while

  3. I laughed when you spoke about your parent’s collection from hotels they stayed in the past because I do that too! Hahahaha
I just love you! and I would totally do this if we had a car LMAO But I have a big bag which can hold a lot of stuff. Hmm you gave me an idea.
    You rock Kate!

    • Thanks! I know I’ve said the word frequently, but I’m so excited about this project! Mr. T and I do a lot of giving back, but this project was so much easier than I expected and I had to share it! I’m glad that you enjoyed it and that I have given you an idea!

  4. All of your ideas are so crafty…I love them! However, I am more impressed that you actually called the Keurig place to see if you could fix it…….I would never have made the time or had the patience. I would have just asked someone to buy me a new one for my birthday.:) That purple one is cute as a button though…..So, nice work!

    • Thank you! They are so much easier than I expected, I had fun shopping for good bargains too, as it is important to me to show my son that it doesn’t have to cost a lot to make a big change in the world!
I agree – we were designed to give! Thanks so much! 🙂

    • Half of the fun for me is hunting down the bargains for the supplies! I made a sample bag for Mr. T to show his youth group, and I was surprised at how full I got the sack! On average, you can make them for $3/bag, and I’m just in love with the concept!!

  5. These random acts of kindness is such a nice thing. I enjoy the update. The whole list thing reminds me of the show My Name is Earl. Anyway, it’s very cool that you are inspiring and teaching your son – as well as your readers. Awesome stuff!

Just watched “The Bucket List” and one of the questions Morgan Freeman asked was “Have you found happiness?” The other was “Have you shared this happiness?”

I thought of you and this list. I’m proud of what you are doing.

    • Thank you!! I’ve found that holding myself accountable didn’t take any of the joy out of doing things for others, but is keeping me more aware of it. 🙂
We took a sample of the blessing bags to church today so T could run it by the youth director and they loved the idea. So, I think it’s going to be a great addition to our lives!
Again, thank you, it means a lot to me that you said so!

  7. You are a wonderful person and a great example for your son!

Our Keurig is on it’s last leg as well, I was really sad about until I saw your new baby 🙂 Maybe it’s time I let it go and get a new one!

    • Thank you so much! I’ve really enjoyed us being accountable for the acts of kindness this year, as it’s kept it in the front of our minds and I’ve so loved watching it all through my son’s eyes!

Oh, the purple… I don’t have the words. I did have a blue one last time, but the purple, I’m just in love!

  8. I love the Blessing Bags, Kate! What a fantastic way to help, I may have to do this with my daughter. You’re such a kind and thoughtful person 🙂
And, the purple Keurig is awesome! We had one that died too a while back after all the descaling with vinegar pain in the booty. We finally had to get a new one too.

    • Thanks! We took a sample to the youth group this morning and the director liked the idea, so Mr. T and I will be making those for their trips to distribute to the homeless instead of just canned food. I’m so in love with them that I’ll be keeping some in my car, too!

What a great post, and I am glad Mr. T gets a kick out of giving back too 🙂

A purple Keurig would almost make me want to drink coffee. Almost.

    • My heart is so full watching Mr. T and his acts of kindness. He is doing extra chores to save up money to go but can openers. Many of the homeless said they get cans donated but can’t open them.
And I use my keurig to make my daily oatmeal, too! 🙂

  10. This is such a good idea Kate! If only I thought of something like that when I turned 40 last year 🙂 You have a such a generous heart, if only there were more Kates like you in this world! 🙂
