Double Standard Anyone?

This weekend my reality was challenged.  It was very hard to let go and NOT have a double standard… In fact, these are the words that came out of my mouth “Well, if you were gay, I’d let you do it – so I don’t really have a reason why you can’t do it since you are straight.”

I didn’t have a valid argument.  This was a situation that in my mind shouldn’t happen because “you are a guy”.

And, it’s true, but not valid!

Here’s a hint:

Now, let’s back up and get the rest of the story!

Kate and Mr T

First, we’ll start with a gratuitous shot of me and Mr. T – He’s in his Easter outfit thanks to Grammy and Papa – and just looking so handsome!

Really, there was no point to the inclusion of that picture!

Now onto the story, a few days ago My Amy texted me and the conversation went something like this:

Winter sucks

Yes, it does!

Haven’t seen you in forever!

I know, but I think the sun is coming out, so I’ll probably be leaving the house soon!

We should get together… want to do something this weekend?

Sounds great!

Want to go across the border?

Cha-ching!  Of course I do… because just across the border is where you’ll find the casino! She had to work that morning, and I was volunteering at the food co-op mid-morning, so we met at my place at noon, went and picked up another friend and took off!

Winstar or bust!

FREEDOM!!!

It was so much fun! We walked the length of the casino and then back again, trying different machines along the way and just catching up with each other!

Casino bird kept taking my money!

I would like to say I was strategic and parlayed my small pocket change into a large fund; however, I wasn’t strategic! And, no, the casino didn’t end up giving me a big check; however, I won enough to make me a very happy camper!

I told Mr. T that I’d be paying off our weekend fun, but that we should do something special together with the leftovers!

He picked pedicures.

Mother and son pedicures

It was a good idea, there is something about being in those chairs that invites conversation, and really, who doesn’t love a good foot massage! As we were sitting there, he looks at me and goes “Can I get a color?”

No, of course you can’t get a color.  You. Are. A. Boy.

That’s what I said in my head.  Actually, I may have screamed it in my head!

What came out was “If you want.”

I grew up in a culture where boys didn’t wear polish.

But, my parents grew up in a culture where boys didn’t wear earrings and that never phased me. Mr. T got his ears pierced at a young age.  He doesn’t wear them often now; however, that never bothered me.

So, maybe I’m old fashioned.  Maybe I need to be the one to loosen up and let it go.

And, I’m not kidding, I told Mr. T that if he was gay, I’d totally understand him wanting polish – so I didn’t have a reason for saying no just because he was straight.

Then Mr. T goes “Can I get hot pink?”

Go big or go home, I guess.

And that’s how I ended up with a son with hot pink toes sitting next to me at the nail salon.

And that’s how I ended up struggling with the double standard.

It was hard letting him walk out the door this morning.  But really, is there a valid argument?

Because it isn’t societal norm. Because I’m not comfortable with it.  Because it isn’t done.

None of that is valid.

None of those statements represent the person I want to be.

On one hand, it’s outside my comfort zone.  On the other hand, I’m so proud of that kid for being who he wants and not being bound by societal norm.

Yes, it’s a double standard, and yes, sometimes I still struggle with it.

But this morning, I was the person I wanted to be and I watched my son walk out the door with hot pink toe nails being the person he wants to be.

And I smiled, ’cause yeah, that just happened.

Wordless Wednesday 9-10-14

My Friday Night for Wordless Wednesday.

painting

I helped mom paint a room in their house.

Bowling shoes

I put on some really ugly shoes that I actually really like and got set to have a “ball” with my friends Kevin and Sandi.

Bowling 2

I envied those that actually have “form” when they bowl! (That’s Kevin showing us how it’s done!)

Bowling score

New high score! I hit 70!! And I had a strike!  It was a great game!

Waffles

I refueled with a stop at Waffle House.

Bacon

And you have to have bacon.

It’s okay to be jealous!

Holiday Weekend Time!

I’m so ready for the day to be over!  We are going camping this weekend and we are all very much ready for the time away!

Camping

Here is how we camp – mini fridge and automatic coffee maker (not seen).

I surprised Mr. T with his very own tent about a month ago. It’s not big, but it’s easy to set up and he gets to take it with him when he moves out.  He’s excited, in his own laid back way.

We also borrowed a pop up canopy from mom and dad for our time down by the lake’s edge.

I also have a new cooler, slightly bigger than the last one – which broke on me!

Oh, and I have my new car to pack this all into! My new and bigger car.

My new and bigger car didn’t feel any bigger when Mr. T and I were loading up last night! We finally decided that it was the extra tent, canopy and ice chest!  They were taking up too much room!

I ended up having to unpack my dresser and pack the contents in a different container.

Yes, I said dresser.

Then we came inside after it was all said and done and discovered the two food tubs.

Out we went, again.

Eventually we did get it all in the car.  And then part of it out again so I can go fill up the coolers with ice!

Then I had to give major props to Karen, who is the one that asked if I had done a “dry fit” of the camping gear in the new car! Our Facebook conversation cracked me up.  I decided that since my conversation about camping involves the words “astro turf entry” “pee bucket” and “dresser”, well, that probably tells you all you need to know about how I camp!

Having said that – I can’t sit at my computer any longer!  Have a wonderful weekend – and if you all would refrain from blogging this weekend so I don’t miss any of your wonderful blogs, that would be awesome! 🙂

Camping tents

Okay, the best part of this last picture is – I don’t think any of us are using those same tents!  In fact, I can promise you we aren’t!  The first one is my old one – and I have a bigger and easier to set up one now.  The middle one is Pam’s, and she has an easy up – that white one she is bringing for her granddaughter to use.  And the last one – I think that is my Amy’s, and she has a new easy up tent, too!  I’ll have to get a new tent picture this weekend!

On a more serious note – a big thanks to the men and woman of our Armed Forces and their families.  May you all take a moment this weekend to remember those that gave their all for you.  (To my neighbors up North, I know this doesn’t apply directly to you guys, but hey, we’ll take all the good energy we can get for our troops!)

Memorial Day

Box of Hats

What a weekend!  Let me add a disclaimer to start the post: I don’t have anyone’s permission to share this but am doing so anyway!  This goes for all of the pictures I’m going to include!

I’m working on learning how to make bread.  And I’m super glad that I never sold or donated this electric knife!

bread

We had Easter early this weekend.  Mom bought tie dye egg coloring kit.  Oh yeah – it was awesome!  No, I didn’t get any pictures of the eggs we created, and no, we didn’t actually hunt any of the eggs.  I’m not sure why we colored them, but I know we did have fun!

Easter eggs

We did go to a local Farmers Market.  Bella thought grilled cheese was just the most awesome food ever!

Bella1 Bella3

This is Bella’s brother Joshua.  He’s just too cute not to include!

This is my new car.  It’s pretty awesome.

I also painted the work bench in my garage!  I had a coupon for a free 8 oz sample jar of paint, so Mr. T and I hit Lowe’s and I told him to pick a color.  We got home and I had a blast cleaning off the top and painting!  Right now, the top is as clean as it’s ever been! LOL.  Give me time and I’ll have more projects stacked on top of it again!

Mr. T and I went to church Sunday, and stayed after because he and I are both performing in the Easter service.

I say performing – I’m not really. Mr. T and several other wonderful people are performing – I am a narrator. I am reading. I can read.

After our table read, we were looking through the closet of clothes to see what costumes everyone would wear. And, well, we found a box of hats.

church

Pretty much I was loving my crown and made sure to get my crown in the picture and failed to actually get my face in there!

I hope that the rest of you had a wonderful weekend – and here is to a great week ahead!

I Don’t Understand

Remember how I told you about my busy weekend? And how the weekend culminated with me helping mom rearrange her very heavy bedroom furniture?   I mean, super heavy, the night stands have 3′ granite tops and they were the lightest things in the room kinda heavy?

If you can't lift the furniture, all the sliders in the world can't help you!

If you can’t lift the furniture, all the sliders in the world can’t help you!

Okay, good.

So, that Sunday night I got a call at 9:45 from my mom.  I might paraphrase a bit, but below is how the conversation went:

Mom: What time is it?  We unplugged all the clocks during the move and I don’t know what time it is.

Me: 9:45

Mom: Okay, good, I wasn’t sure if it was 8:45 or 9:45.  Oh, guess what? We broke the bed when we moved it.

Me: Really?  No way!

Mom: I sat down to get ready for bed and it fell apart.

Me:  That’s not right!  I didn’t notice.

Mom:  Me either, but your dad is down in the garage getting some tools.  I guess even if we have to put a screw in it, it is still hand carved.  No one will know.  But I think we need to move the bed.

Me:  What do you mean?

Mom:  I’m not sure I like this layout.

Me:  I don’t understand.

Mom:  I wanted the bed over here to get the breeze, but I think the headboard will block it.

Me:  I don’t get it.

Mom:  We may have to go back to the way it was.  You think you might have some time this week…

Me:  I don’t know what you are saying.

Mom:  (pause)  Maybe I can wait for your sister this weekend.

Me:  You are living with it for a week!

Mom: Well, we do have to fix the bed – here comes your dad, he’s a sight in his slippers, underwear and tool box! Oh, he doesn’t find this funny, I gotta go…

I Pulled a Muscle in my Bum

It’s been a super busy and fun weekend.

Image

Honestly, I have no clue what I did Friday night – I’d like to say it’s because I was partying so hard I have no memory – but alas, the reality is that my memory has never been good and is getting worse.  I think we just hung out at home.  Yeah, let’s just say we hung out at home!

Saturday I got up and enjoyed a cup of coffee whilst watching the Pioneer Woman and then got Mr. T up so he could shower.  Papa came and picked him up and they went to repair the fence.  Apparently Cassius (Lee’s boxer) has been jumping the half fence and landing 5′ below in the easement and then visiting the neighbors yard. The neighbors weren’t all that happy to have him visit.  Maybe he has bad breath.   While they were gone I cranked the tunes and got the house clean!  It felt great!

Dad and Mr. T worked until 3:00 pm and dad dropped him back off so he could shower and we went bowling! It was so awesome!  There were 9 of us total, and the guy behind the counter was super cool and worked with me and told me which package was most fiscally responsible and he goes “It comes with ‘six’ shoe rentals, if you get my meaning” (Dude, you are going to save me money with a party package and give us all the extra shoe rentals we need at no extra charge – yeah, I hear ya!!)

Image

My lovely bowling shoes! And now that I think about it – I don’t remember taking my socks back out of my purse… they may still be in there… huh.

It was so much fun!  I’m a crappy bowler, but I don’t let it stop me! Also, I bowl overhand.  I wasn’t aware that this was odd until this event!  I tried to bowl “properly” and go underhand a couple of times, but it wasn’t comfortable.  Oh, and there was the time I almost fell but didn’t!!  I was so proud of myself for not falling – cause hey – it’s me, a klutz,

and a slipper floor – it’s guaranteed I will wipe out at least once.  But I didn’t fall!!

Of course – the effort it took not to fall – well, I pulled a muscle in my bum, my derriere, my gluteus maximus.  No joke.  I pulled a muscle in my butt.  Fortunately, it only really bothers me getting in and out of the car, or sitting down.  Or anytime my butt is needed in an activity.

It was fun, though, and we all went out to dinner afterwards at a cute little Mexican Restaurant – and they had the jumbo Cowboy football schedules, so score! I got one for my fridge.

(Hey Holly – it has the Redskins on the opposite side! I’d send you a pick, but the Redskins suck!)

(Oh, hey – MMK – the Eagles suck too, just making sure that you knew that!)

Man, I love football!

Anyway… Sunday we got up and headed for church, and as soon as I pulled into the parking lot I remembered – they weren’t having classes today, they were having some type of potluck thingy, and I didn’t have a dish.  Sigh.  We turned around.  (Yes, I’m sure I could have stayed, but I don’t like to partake if I don’t participate.)

So, we drove back home – with a quick detour at Denny’s!  The plus side was that Mr. T and I got to enjoy a lovely breakfast together.  It rocked!

Yummy!

Even more yummy!!!!

Then we headed home to change clothes and over to Grammy and Papa’s house.  Mr. T and Papa had to finish fixing the fence and mom wanted my help rearranging the furniture in their bedroom.  This sounds easy, right?

Wrong.  Their furniture is heavy.  I’m not talking about challenging to move, I’m talking about the fact that their bed is so heavy that I almost had to go get a jack out of the garage just to lift the bed long enough to get the sliders underneath!!  Fortunately, mom and I are stronger than we look.  It took a couple of hours and enough sweat to fill the swimming pool, but we got it accomplished!

Quick break for lunch and checked the progress of Papa and Mr. T and they were close… so I went out and helped.  Now, I have been welding a hammer since I was little and it was embarrassing. I messed up in four different places… Ugh.  Oh well, I was too worn out to do more than just grab another nail! Then we were able to put up some chicken wire and voila! Cassius should not be able to escape!

Please, cross your fingers he doesn’t escape.

Mr. T and I made it home and I saw him sit on the couch and I was like “get your butt off my couch!! Go shower!!”  He giggled and goes “Look at my ankles.”  “Oh my goodness!! Get off my couch!! You have a dirt line that is five shades darker than your skin – GET OFF MY COUCH!!!”

In an effort to put a good spin on things, during the drive home I told Mr. T “It’s a good kinda sore, it’s a sore than comes from having fun and working hard!  Shows we really participated this weekend!”

Yup, that totally happened, I tried to convince myself and T that these sore muscles were a good thing!  I think he was too tired to call my bluff!

Oh – he walked through the room so I asked him what we did on Friday night:

We rented GI Joe 2 and had an at home movie night!

We rented GI Joe 2 and had an at home movie night!

One for the Jar

A great weekend was had – great enough that T and I put it in our memory jar (have you seen these on Pinterest? You create a jar and throughout the year you put in memories and good times that you’ve had and you read them at the end of the year.  My Diva’s are all doing this and we will read them at the NYE party this year.  It should be awesome!)

Anyway, it was one for the memory jar.  Friday night Mr. T had his theatre banquet and won two awards! YAY!  Excellence in Acting and Excellence in Tech.  I’m so proud of my guy!

We did get together with the family and celebrated my sister’s birthday and Father’s Day.  There was an odd moment when mom said she wanted to go through Lee’s items.  Neither my sis nor I had any idea this was planned, and it surprised both of us, cause as you know, my mom doesn’t get rid of things.  We did expect that a few sentimental items would be doled out, but never expected, especially so soon, that we’d go through his items.  Well, my sister had a meltdown.  I really thought that I caused it, that I was going through things too quickly and it upset her.  She says it wasn’t me, and after talking to her, I kinda believe her.  She’s just still emotional, and being weeks away from having a baby, a bit more hormonal, too.  Ask how much fun it was to celebrate her birthday after she’s been crying… yeah.

We did survive!  We did not go through the items, though.  And that is okay!

Image

This has no relevance to the story. I just haven’t shared my love of Dean Winchester lately. That is all.

Sunday was a crappy morning, we were running late for church and ended up forgetting a couple of things… and church just drove me nuts.  I’m so struggling there – but working on it and praying about it – and really, T is happy, and that’s all that matters.  We didn’t stay for service, but left and drove through Micky D’s for breakfast and then over to a friends house for a pool party.  So totally worth it! We had so much fun!  Mr. T got lots of compliments, which makes us both glow!

Monday we asked mom and dad if they wanted to meet us for a movie.  Star Trek baby!!  We met at the movie bistro and ordered lunch and watched the movie.  It was awesome! It really made my inner nerd happy!

Today I’m back at work and actually being productive! It helped that my boss is out of town, so I was able to get caught up on a lot of things without his interruptions.  I’m ready for the rest of the week to fly by – and only 5-1/2 more days of school left! Yay!

And now, just cause I love you and we can all use a break, I present a You Tube video that I just love of Jensen and Misha (Dean and Castiel) doing a panel.  Someone from the audience brought an old headshot of Misha… and actually, as I type this, I think I might have shared it with you before… Huh.  Have I blogged so much that I can’t remember what I’ve shared OR do I just love this clip so much that I have to keep sharing?  You be the judge! If I was a good blogger, I’d go back and look and see if I’ve ever titled a blog called “Acting on Camera”.   Well crap, I am a good blogger and I went back and checked, and yes, I have shared this before – but I have some new readers, so I’m sharing it again!  (I’ve had issues with it embedding properly, so if you can’t click to watch, feel free to do the hard work and copy/paste in your browser!)
