That’s How We Roll

I went camping this weekend.  I’m sure you didn’t know that because it’s not like I’ve mentioned it in every post for the past couple of weeks!

We had so much fun!  It felt so good to get away, enjoy the fresh air, play in the water and hang out with friends.  My Amy and Scott ended up going a day early – and I seriously considered it, but I really had to work the next morning; however, I did wrap up early and get there a few hours sooner than expected!

Of course, getting wrapped up took a bit of time! I ran to my parents house to drop off my dog and pick up dad’s truck and then ran by Pam’s office to fill my cooler with ice.  Then, Mr. T was awesome and loaded up the truck.

Mr. T has never loaded up a truck, but by the time I got out there, he was all but done.  I hated to tell him how he messed up, so I just told him that we had to go by Walmart to get some straps or a spider bungee.  I really didn’t want to spend money, so we pulled into the Walmart parking lot and I told T “Let’s just see if we can rearrange a bit.”  It only took three items and we had the truck properly done.  He was upset a bit that he didn’t do it right – but when I reinforced that he’d never done it – and it only took us about 3 items in order to fix it – that was pretty darn good!

Fire! And I’m sure it was the winning shot!

We arrived at camp and unloaded the truck and set my tent up – and then we set up T’s tent.  His own tent.  He was not staying with me.  It was weird – but I gotta tell ya – I had so much room in my tent!  That was pretty darn awesome! 🙂

We helped everyone else set up as they arrived and got camp situated.  Then there was the trip to Walmart.  I’d forgotten an extension cord and surge protector for T’s tent.  It happens, even to the best of us!

We make roughing it look easy!  Here is our cooking area.  We set up a table and Karen’s way cool camping table (that does include a kitchen sink – 0f sorts!) to the side of the primary picnic table, that way, when we are done cooking, the table isn’t full of camp stoves and grills.  You can’t see it, but there are a couple of grills and a huge fryer to the left.  🙂

We grilled burgers and dogs Friday night, made eggs, bacon, sausage and hash browns for Saturday breakfast and due to the fact that one of the group had a ton of frozen catfish, we had a fish fry Saturday night.  Yummy!  Fried catfish, french fries, fried okra and hush puppies!

Later that night, we made peach cobbler.  Over the camp fire.  No kidding.

So, maybe the picture doesn’t do it justice, but I gotta tell you – it was pretty cool!

We spent time hanging out, many hours in the lake.  We all went fishing. We even had some really cute guys come over from another camp to play horseshoes with us!

Sunday morning, about 5:30 am I woke to a flash of lightening and the boom of thunder.  I’d been dead asleep – and we’d only been in bed about 4 hours!  So, I was a bit disoriented.  I did get up and grab my sleep pants, I know I need to go help because half the camp hadn’t put up their rain guard.  All I could think about was the instructions you receive on the plane: “In the event of an emergency and the cabin loses pressure, put your mask on first before helping the children and those around you.”  I figured that had to apply, so I zipped my windows up first.

I heard and then saw Karen putting the rain guard on her son’s tent and Brian, her husband working on theirs – but I had to go see Mr. T first!  I went over and unzipped his door and woke him up – bless his heart, he was so tired and zipped up his windows as far as he could reach without getting out of bed! LOL.  I leaned over and finished getting his windows closed.  Then I went and helped Brian – well, tried too – again, I was pretty disoriented! Soon enough we were done, and not a moment too soon.  I went back to bed and listened to the rain plop on my tent and the thunder roll by. I love nature!!

The next morning it was windy for several hours and then the storm was all gone and we were left with muddy tents and everything blowing away on us!  Once the wind stopped though, it was easy enough to pack up – and since we knew we had to come home and set the gear up to wash and dry it – we weren’t all that concerned about things being neat!

Image

That tent was down to it’s last stake before we went and took it down. There was no point in righting the chairs, they’d just blow back over in the wind!

All in all – it was one of my best trips yet.  I had such a good time and really enjoyed hanging out with my friends and playing and just getting away from it all, even if it was just for the weekend.

Mashed Potato Sandwiches

I know, I know, you are all tired of my drama when it comes to my teeth.  Well, I don’t care.  It is the most interesting thing happening in my life right now so suck it up and sit through one more post about it! I mean: Please sit through this with me!

I had the unplanned tooth extraction on Tuesday.  Half way through the dentist stops and goes “Kate, I’m having some difficulty with this.”  Due to my TMJ, my jaw is slightly misshapen and the roots of my teeth don’t go straight down, they take a jog in there.  Now, I had been praying through this entire procedure; however, at this point, I stepped up the prayers to non-stop.  I was carrying on a conversation with God that was pretty much “Please help her get this done, please be with her, please let her get this out, pretty please let this work!”

Image

She kept working on the extraction.  Then, about ¾ of the way through she stopped again.  “Kate, we need to take an x-ray, I’m struggling to get this last little bit out.  If I can’t get it, I’ll have to send you to a surgeon.”

Not going to lie, at hearing this, my eyes filled with tears.  I can’t impart to you how much I really didn’t want to go see an oral surgeon.  I mean, really, REALLY didn’t want to go.  My prayers turned to the promise stage “Lord, I’ll do whatever you want me to, just let her get this out.  Am I currently too obsessed with the TV show Supernatural?  Okay, fine, I’ll stop watching it – just let her get this out.  You want my first born?  Okay, fine, just let her get this tooth out.”  (I don’t think I really offered up Mr. T, but, I might have!! It’s pretty much a blur…)

Next thing I knew, she was stitching me up!!  This one wouldn’t heal on its own, but she managed to get it out.  I also needed to have a script for antibiotics, since the work had been so invasive.  I had filled my script for pain pills last week, but ran to Wal-Mart for some penicillin.  The wait is 45 minutes.  I sat on the bench and did my best to survive.  It was done in 10 minutes!  Massive blessings!

Heaven in a cup!

I went home and curled up on the couch.  I texted my dad and told him that I did need him to pick up Mr. T that night and would he please grab me a chocolate shake? Not only did he bring me a shake, but he brought me mashed potatoes and gravy.  Oh my goodness.  Best meal ever.  I made it about half way through the mashed potatoes and gravy and then put them in the fridge.  I had been starving, but didn’t really have anything at the house I could eat, so this was a life saver. (Yes, I had been to Target that morning and yes, I just completely spaced the fact that I needed food I could actually eat…but I did remember to pick up The Hobbit for T’s Easter gift and a couple of chocolate bunnies for us! Priorities you know!)

The next morning I was working from the couch and got hungry.  I knew I only had half of a serving of potatoes left… and it had to last me breakfast and lunch.  So, I did what anyone would do.  I grabbed a couple of slices of bread to go with it!  I got my spoon and smeared a bit of potatoes on the bread and took a bite.  It was perfect.  It was just the right size for my mouth to handle, and soft enough that I could eat it.

Image

Best thing since sliced bread!

I had my own little mashed potato and gravy sandwich.  It was Heaven – and so good that I went ahead and had it again for lunch!

For the record, today I’m doing so much better.  I am still slightly swollen and I ache, but overall, I feel that I’m on the road to recovery!   She did chip the tooth next to it as she was working, but I have to have a root canal on that one in three weeks, so I’m not worried!

But, you know what I really want?  Some crack.  How soon till I can eat that you think?

Christmas sweaters

First off, I lied last night to Mr. T.  I didn’t mean to, but the second half of this post will explain it all.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t last night – I think it was Sunday, before the game.  Time is meaningless to me, well, not meaningless, but definitely not linear.  Time is not a straight line in my reality.

The point, we were running through Wal-Mart.  He wanted out of the house, he hadn’t picked out his special ornament this year, and, well, Wal-Mart is open and Hobby Lobby isn’t (which leads me to believe it was Sunday).  We walked past a collection of holiday sweater vests.  You know, those tacky things that are pulled out by women every where this time of year.  I looked at him with a smug smile on my face and said “Aren’t you glad that you don’t have a mom that wears those?!” Okay, first off, I know better than to be smug, it’ll bite me in the butt every time.  Keep reading.  Secondly – did I not state several blogs ago that I was working on NOT comparing myself to others??  Did I not go on and on in detail how it isn’t healthy?? Obviously I’m still a work in progress, but at least in retrospect I recognized it.  And, it was suppose to be funny, a joke, but because I was smug, and it bit me in the butt, now it has turned into so much more than a joke about the stupid Christmas sweater vest!!

To recap, cause I kinda went off there:  Me to Mr. T: “Aren’t you glad you don’t have a mom that wears these (insert unsaid but thought smugly in my head ‘tacky Christmas sweater vests’)?”

To which T replied “Yes, I’m glad, but I’m stuck with this” and he tugged on the sleeve of my admittedly bright tie-dye shirt.  Well crap.  That’s beyond true.  I had to laugh, and said something along the lines of “good point, at least with the sweater vest, that’s only one time a year, you’re stuck with tie-dye all year long!”  We also had a laugh, cause my mom is a Christmas sweater vest person.

The adage “when you point your finger, there are three pointing back at you” was totally true that day in Wally World.  I failed at not comparing myself to others (even though I really meant it as a joke) and I was smug about it as well – and it was pointed out that, well, I have my own little quirk that others laugh about, so I had no right to be smug.

All of this came from a random joke I was making as we ran through Wal-Mart picking stuff up.  WELCOME TO MY BRAIN.

It gets worse…

Tonight is Diva Dinner. It’s the monthly get together of the girls.  Once a month, those of us that can, get together for dinner.  We pick a different place each time (with very few exceptions.) Every October is Diva Date night and we bring our husbands, significant others, I’ve brought a co-worker before, and sometimes, us single diva’s are each other’s date.  For the most part though, it’s just us girls.  And we discuss life, work, kids, grand-kids, each other and whatever comes to mind! It’s just one night a week that we can step away from it all.  Of course, in my case, I still have to cook Mr. T dinner, but I’ve decided that if I get a treat that night, he can too, so sometimes he gets to pick out a jar of spaghetti-o’s or something that he doesn’t get to eat on a regular basis.  But, again, I digress.  I think that I’m stalling – afraid to get to the point and tell you the rest of the story.

Let me just dive in.  In the mornings I get up and shower and just randomly throw on clothes.  Usually it’s jean shorts and a t-shirt.  It’s freaking freezing down here today, so I threw on my black pj pants and a knit long sleeve shirt.  I sit at my desk and work, and it’s Tuesday, so it’s laundry day, which means I fit in laundry during the day.  I went to my closet to put up two hand wash shirts from last week that have been hanging there and while I was in my closet, I pulled out a pair of jeans and looked for a top to wear tonight at dinner.  As I mentioned, it’s freaking freezing down here so I needed something warm.  It’s our Christmas dinner, so I want something festive.

I pulled out a Holiday sweater… not a sweater vest mind you… but I pulled out a damn holiday sweater.  Complete with mistletoe.

Yeah, apparently I am that mom.  See, I told you me opening my mouth would come back to bite me in the butt!!! I started to take a picture to attach, so there’d be the visual component, but I don’t want to torture you!

The Ugly Truth

Did you ever see the movie The Ugly Truth? It’s hysterical.  But at one point Mike tells Abby that hair in a pony tail sends the message that she’s just given up.  I get where he’s going with that, but I live in Texas, and during the summer, a pony tail is perfectly acceptable.  We do plain, and we do super fancy pony tails, but we do pony tails.

It’s Friday, I had time, so I was going to do grocery shopping during my lunch break.  Now keep in mind, I work from home, so unless I have a meeting, I don’t wear makeup.  And I’ve been known to go out in no makeup whatsoever.  I’m very comfortable with my natural beauty.  🙂

But I don’t go to Wal-Mart without at least running a brush through my hair, and today I tossed on some eyeliner and mascara.  As I was doing it, I was chiding myself – why am I bothering for a quick trip to Wal-Mart.  And then I remembered…

Here is one reason I make sure I’m dressed

Here is another reason why I make sure that I’m dressed…

This is why sometimes I wear a belt to Wal-Mart.

And here is why I brush my hair – or at least toss it into a pony tail!

Unlike some, I’m totally okay going out in sweat pants – they are pants, it says so in the name! And as we all know, shorts and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable in my reality!  Yes, I go out without any makeup.  According to The Ugly Truth, this means that I’ve given up. I don’t think I have – but denial is a powerful thing!

Happy Weekend Everyone!
