Tense

First, let me apologize.

I am not a niche blogger.

If you came here because I once wrote a funny post,

Looking for funny at Did That Just Happen Blog

a running post

Eye of the Tiger power song at Did That Just Happen Blog

or maybe a cooking post

Gordan Ramsey cooking meme at Did That Just Happen Blog

– and you wanted more of that, on a consistent basis, this might not be the place for you!

And, I truly feel badly over this!  I’d love to write about running. Or cooking.  And heavens knows I’d actually love to be funny!  But alas, I’m a storyteller.  I spin a good yarn.

But that is neither here nor there – I just felt the need to get that out!

Plus Eye of the Tiger is totally my Power Song and when I saw that e-card, well, it had to be utilized!

But today I want to talk about tense.  And this doesn’t fall into any category listed above!

noun

1.

(grammar) a category of the verb or verbal inflections, such as present, past, and future, that expresses the temporal relations between what is reported in a sentence and the time of its utterance
I was talking to a colleague the other day and said “It’s okay, I can say that, my brother was Korean”
He WAS Korean. Like overnight he all of the sudden wasn’t anymore.
I was trying to say that my brother is no longer with us… but he is still Korean, dead or alive – and y’all I have let this twirl and twist around my head for days… I am not sure how to relate that my brother is Korean, but no longer with us, without going into a massively long explanation!
Am I the only one that runs across stuff like this and then freaks when they can’t figure it out? Or, fingers crossed, has someone figured this out for me already?!? Is there an answer? A cheat sheet? Anything? Cause the tense makes me a bit tense!!
Happy Tuesday everyone! 🙂

I Would Blog, but Size Matters

I would blog, but…

There is Valentines Day candy in the stores! I fell in love with this, it was a heart, with a heart and had a dream catcher on it!  It was like it was practically calling my name in the store and begging to be eaten.

I heart youI obliged, by the way.

I would blog, but…

Mr. T ended up getting a different car.  I drove a little compact car for many years intending to saving money so I could buy me a car and I would give T the compact car when he turned 16, which I did.  And, he warmed my heart, because at least once a week he was telling me about an issue that had come up, but how fortunate he was that he had a car to drive!

size matters

We got this Expedition for a steal from my boss.  Mr. T went from a 4 door compact to a massive 3 row Expedition.  When we were at Walmart, I saw the decal that said “Size Matters” and cracked up.

That decal now adorns his new car!

I would blog, but…

project wall

I finished my Project Wall!  As soon as I got it up and all of the art work I had picked out in the frames, then naturally the Universe sent me new art – but – I was smart, and got frames that make it super easy to change the pictures!

I love my project wall!  I can’t believe I waited as long as I did!  And, if you look closely, you’ll see this:

Tracie photography

It’s a beautiful postcard, made from an original photograph taken by Life in the Wylde West, it also has a feather in the frame, if you follow Tracie at all, you’ll know feathers are her thing, and the fact that she shared with me just fills my heart! (PS, you can purchase artwork from Tracie and many other local artists at Crated.com, I’ve ordered from this site before and had a great experience!) <— Not getting paid for that, I just really like it!

Speaking of filling my heart, I would blog, but…

tax time

It is tax time!  Mr. T grabbed my laptop, sat on the couch next to me and we did his taxes for the first time.  There just aren’t words!

I would blog, but…

I lost my pinky toenail.

lost my pinky toenailIt just fell off.  We all know how very graceful I am, well several months ago I was unloading a cooler and wouldn’t you know, turned around to pull more items out and walked right into it!  Stubbed my pinky toe, hopped around and wished that I was one to let loose with explicit language and then went on with my life!  Every time I got a pedicure we noticed that the nail was still bruised, but I really never gave it any thought.

Until it fell off!

I would blog, but…

college info

We’ve been getting letters from colleges in the mail.  I’m not happy with getting letters from colleges in the mail.  It freaks me out a bit to tell the truth!

I would blog, but…

We patiently wait

I’ve been spending time with teenagers that aren’t mine!

winners

And time with 1st placers!

We are the champions

So, I would blog, but sometimes you just don’t have anything to say!

It’s the End of the Year as we Know it!

Goodbye 2013 and Hello 2014.

I’m currently thinking about New Year’s Resolutions… I can’t wait to share them with you all!

Until then, I’ve decided to get on the band wagon and provide you with my Top 5 Blogs from the past year!  Whoo Hooo!  Lucky you!

Now, I do have a disclaimer.  I eliminated my very top blog as it has 2,000 more hits than the next one down… obviously not a fan favorite, just a search engine favorite!

A Supernatural Obsession

Nerd fandom

I think that this post is a hit because of the search terms; however, I’m super happy to include it because I like to share the love of the Winchester brothers.  You’re welcome.

Lessons from the Movies: The Bucket List

The Bucket List

The Bucket List

I did love this post.  Looking back, the formatting is off and I can tell that I have modified the way I blog just a bit; however, I’m really pleased that this one made the list!  I love my bucket list!

The Baby Shower Didn’t Suck

Really? You want to display and then eat a cake that is a baby's butt? Am I the only one that has issues with this??

Really, you want to display a cake that looks like a baby butt and then expect me to eat it.  Not happening.  And if you give me a part of the cake that looks like a human leg I will personally cut off your toes and see how YOU like it!  Okay, sorry, but baby showers can be freaky things and even just posting this brings up an irrational response apparently…

Then He Kissed the Back of my Hand

Now, this post still brings a tear to my eye.  In fact, I almost didn’t re-read this post, but I couldn’t help it.  Thanks to all of my fellow bloggers who followed me through this journey, you guys were there through the medical jargon, the laughter and the tears.  This is still my favorite post of all time.  And probably always will be.

What Does Being Brave Mean?

Bravery[3]

There are days that just making it through the day makes me feel brave.  I know that everyone has a different definition of “bravery”, and some of the items that I have trouble with you might be able to breeze right through; but the fact that I do them despite the fact that my heart is pounding out of my chest – well, I’ll take that as a win!

Thank you to those who have read my blogs, and many thanks to those of you that take the time to leave a comment.  I’ve really enjoyed meeting and interacting with all of you this past year – you’ve all brought laughter and light into my life.

Double The Fun

Winding Road is one of my new favorite bloggers.  She tends to get sentimental when she posts late at night, she writes beautiful poetry, and she’s learning to not be afraid to take risks! As a mother of two, she has some great stories and I’ve been touched and inspired and had great laughs as I’ve read her blog.  If you don’t know Kerry at Winding Road, I highly suggest you give her a follow and spend some time getting to know her.

While all of the above is very true, today I really love her because she nominated me for two awards! You heard me right – Two!! If that wasn’t awesome enough, these are two really cool awards that deal with the blogging community and our relationships with each other.

First is the Reader Appreciation award for those that like or comment on a regular basis.  I love this award because it recognizes those that take the time out of their busy lives to acknowledge that they’ve read the post.  Even just a simple click of the “like” button lets me know that you stopped by.  A comment means that something I wrote was enough to stop you for just a few minutes.  I’ve really enjoyed those who have commented on my blog as it has given me a chance to get to know you all a little better!

reader-app-award

I am so very blessed to be able to pass this along to those that have been very interactive on my blog.  I’m very grateful for the time you have taken to let me know if you liked, agreed with, totally disagreed with or even when I’ve completely and utterly freaked you out!  Those little comments and interactions have given me great joy and I’m very pleased to pass this along to you!

  1. Me, Myself and Kids
  2. Surviving the Madhouse
  3. Motherhood Is An Art
  4. My Journey to Live an Authentic Life
  5. To See the World in a Grain of Sand
  6. You Caught Me Sitting Still

The second award is Semper Fidelis Award.

semperfid-award

Semper Fidelis is Latin for “Always Faithful” or “Always Loyal” and I’m giving this award to Me, Myself and Kids as he is the embodiment of this award in my mind.  I know that I’ve mentioned him before and I will mention him again.  MMK taught me the meaning of becoming a community and has been there for me with advice (both solicited and not!), comfort when things were going wrong and a sounding board when I’ve needed.

I love writing, which is why I originally started this blog; however, due to all of the wonderful people in the blogosphere I’ve gotten a very unexpected side benefit – becoming part of the community.  Arms have been opened wide and welcomed me in – and we’ve shared laughter and a few tears together and I’m so very grateful and very blessed to have all of you as part of my community.

I Don’t Understand

Remember how I told you about my busy weekend? And how the weekend culminated with me helping mom rearrange her very heavy bedroom furniture?   I mean, super heavy, the night stands have 3′ granite tops and they were the lightest things in the room kinda heavy?

If you can't lift the furniture, all the sliders in the world can't help you!

If you can’t lift the furniture, all the sliders in the world can’t help you!

Okay, good.

So, that Sunday night I got a call at 9:45 from my mom.  I might paraphrase a bit, but below is how the conversation went:

Mom: What time is it?  We unplugged all the clocks during the move and I don’t know what time it is.

Me: 9:45

Mom: Okay, good, I wasn’t sure if it was 8:45 or 9:45.  Oh, guess what? We broke the bed when we moved it.

Me: Really?  No way!

Mom: I sat down to get ready for bed and it fell apart.

Me:  That’s not right!  I didn’t notice.

Mom:  Me either, but your dad is down in the garage getting some tools.  I guess even if we have to put a screw in it, it is still hand carved.  No one will know.  But I think we need to move the bed.

Me:  What do you mean?

Mom:  I’m not sure I like this layout.

Me:  I don’t understand.

Mom:  I wanted the bed over here to get the breeze, but I think the headboard will block it.

Me:  I don’t get it.

Mom:  We may have to go back to the way it was.  You think you might have some time this week…

Me:  I don’t know what you are saying.

Mom:  (pause)  Maybe I can wait for your sister this weekend.

Me:  You are living with it for a week!

Mom: Well, we do have to fix the bed – here comes your dad, he’s a sight in his slippers, underwear and tool box! Oh, he doesn’t find this funny, I gotta go…

Disclaimer:  Dad, on the off chance you find this blog, I’m hoping that we’ve gotten to the point where you find the story funny! 🙂 xoxo

Versatile Blogger and Wonderful Team Membership Awards

I am so blessed!  I’ve been nominated for a few more awards, and in the interest of saving time and not boring you, I’m going to break tons of rules and I’m also going to combine them in one post so that you aren’t bombarded by my bragging!

Mummy Flying Solo nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award.  I love this award because the name says it all “Versatile”, embracing a variety of subjects, fields or skills.  I like the idea that I’m versatile!

Image

Rules:

  1. Display the Award Certificate on your website/blog. Check!
  2. Announce your win with a post. Make sure to post a link back to me as a ‘thank you’ for the nomination. Check!
  3.  Present 15 awards to deserving bloggers. Kinda Check!
  4.  Drop them a comment to tip them off after you have linked them in the post. I might do this… or not!
  5.  Post 7 interesting things about yourself.  Yeah Right!
Interesting Things about myself:
  1. I’m a Cancer.  Not that I subscribe to the mass cultural delusion that the sun’s apparent position relative to arbitrarily defined constellations at the time of your birth somehow affects your personality. (15 points if you can name that show)
  2. TV teaches me things – I’ve learned that if you are a secret Santa and you draw the name of a gay man, you get him a cashmere scarf.  A bunch of singing kids taught me this (only 10 points for that show)
  3. I’m a kid at heart and love kid movies.  Seriously, Pixar and Dreamworks have kept me going for the last several years with laughter and lessons.  The secret ingredient is there is no secret ingredient.  It’s all about you.  (20 points if you can guess the movie.)

Okay. Apparently I only have three interesting things to share about myself.  Oh, I’m sure there are more, but this really puts me on the spot – so how about a shameless plug? “If you’d like to find out more interesting things about me – Read My Blog!!!”

In no particular order:

  • Who or What Was That – if you don’t follow Karaboo’s blog full of code names and drama – you really should! Between work, family and friends, her blog covers everything – click the link above to read about The Great Mustard War of 2013.
  • Arash Recovery – I found Arash when he was Freshly Pressed, and so I’m sure at that time many of your saw him too, but if you never read more than that one post you are denying yourself the opportunity to get to know a wonderful man who shares his journey of recovery from an injury that does not define him.
  • The (not so) Secret Life of a PhD Student – I am constantly surprised at how much I learn – and how much I enjoy learning – when I open a new post.  I remember my mom getting her PhD, and it is interesting to see the struggle that the students go through.  We also get links to articles that Student has published, and I’ve been impressed!
  • Shut Up Dad – cracks me up all the time.  We recently were both lamenting the fact that we have to let go of our favorite t-shirt.  He also has a second blog about the comic book he is writing.  Talk about versatile!
  • Today’s Manager – I’m pretty new to following this blog, but I love the way Cranston approaches and offers solutions to common work place situations.  It’s not often that I have to exercise my role as Manager, but I love the articles and keeping my skills fresh and gathering ideas on how to deal with my employees.  Plus, his last article was titled “Booger Fingers”.  How can you not read that?
  • Sarah’s Brand New Chapter – Sarah is newly married, can’t cook and just got a new job.  Despite all of that, I still tend to identify with her and her struggles and her good times.  Her stories are ones that my girlfriends and I tell each other and I’m having fun reading her journey, check her out!

Mummy Flying Solo also nominate me for the Wonderful Team Membership Award.  This one fills my heart because part of blogging goal was to participate.  I didn’t want to be an impersonal blogger that spews forth all of this gibberish, but doesn’t take time to connect.  This is harder than you think, because, at heart, I’m a hermit.  It is hard for me to make connections, and I work hard to be a better person and to connect with others.  So, I feel happy being presented with this, it means that I’m participating!  I’m mingling! (Okay, you can double your points here and get 45 if you can name that movie – but it’s old school!)

I also love this award because there are no rules!!  I don’t have to do anything; however, I want to.  I want to make sure you all know Me, Myself and Kids.  MMK was one of the first people that I connected with when I began blogging, and since then we’ve each done guest posts on each others pages and even a chain blog.  MMK has been my mentor and my inspiration.  He was there when I was ready to quit blogging shortly after starting and he is always there to offer support and encouragement and help point me in the right direction.  I highly recommend checking out Me, Myself and Kids, blog, you won’t be sorry!

Thank you to everyone who reads my blog and follows my adventures.  I look forward to many more years together!

Oh Look, Something Shiny!

I pulled out my laptop to do two things this fine Sunday afternoon.  I needed to do my Daily Challenge (I’m part of a program sponsored by a local hospital, they send you an email challenge each day, and you and your team compete to earn points.  The point don’t get you anything except a healthier lifestyle.  This past week the challenges ranged from making sure you have an extra band-aid in your wallet to doing an imaginary hula hoop ten times both ways.) (Just FYI, I’m much better with an imaginary hula hoop than a real one!)  I also needed to balance my checkbook.  My check book is actually an Excel spreadsheet.  Those were the only two things I had to do.

I got my Daily Challenge done and joined a pact with my mom.  If we both do the next 5 days, we get bonus points.  I’ve been at the top of the leader board the past two weeks, so, yeah, I’ll do the pact and get some bonus points!

Then, well…

Image

I got distracted by checking my yahoo email, which lead me to Word Press, where I proceeded to read through the backlog of blogs on my reader page.  I’ve recently added new blogs to my life and I had plenty to catch up on.  And, it was good – I like discovering new people!  An hour goes by and I’m so tired of sitting down, so I shut my laptop and set it aside…

And see my wallet sitting there.  Cause you know, my goal was to balance my check book.

Well, I got up to stretch my legs, put some stuff in the garage (we are going on our first camping trip of the season next weekend and we had stopped by Walmart after church to pick up a few items I forgot yesterday – Mr. T has decided that he wants to take our second tent for himself this year.  My baby is growing up!! He’s 14, so yeah, he can have his own tent.  But, but, my baby has always stayed with me!!  On the flip side, I get a tent all to myself!!! Oh my goodness!  I get the big tent with the little closet all to myself! This is going to be so cool!)

Sorry… yet again..

Image

I took my water glass to the kitchen to fill it up, finished putting up the last of the items and came back to balance my check book.  I’m pleased with myself, I balanced! And I haven’t gone over!  I picked up my drink to quench my thirst, only to realize I must have gotten distracted in the kitchen cause I didn’t bring my glass back with me.

Image

So, as far as I can remember, short of needing some water, I did get everything accomplished today.  As I mentioned, we have our first big camping trip next weekend, I can’t wait to tell you all about it!  We have so much fun.  This is the family trip (as opposed to our yearly Diva trip – girls only) and we have a big group going.  I’m so ready and can’t stop talking about it – but I must – so that I can save it for a post for you guys to enjoy in a few days!

Oh! 2-1/2 days of school left!! YAY!!!
