It’s All a Matter of Perspective

Recently I’ve been working on staying off social media.  It’s a killer time waster and being Type A, I like to be productive.  So, I’ve taken to checking Facebook and Pinterest when I’m on the stationary bike.  It gives me something to focus on, and frequently I’m on there past my scheduled 30 minute time because I just want to get caught up to my feed!

Part of the bonus is that it keeps my mind sharper and engaged, because seriously, I want to get caught up to my feed, and in order to do that, I have to be able to read and process in a short amount of time!

It also has helped me notice some flaws in my Ego.

Per Dictionary.com: In psychological terms, the ego is the part of the psyche that experiences the outside world and reacts to it.

Case in point.  I ran across this gem the other day.

You see a person's true colors when you are no longer beneficial to their life | Did That Just Happen Blog

My immediate reaction was more on the negative side, my Ego feeling the rejection that comes from life moving and friends moving on.  “Well, he doesn’t need me anymore, he has his new friends”  which translates to “I must be lacking”.

Fortunately, just as soon as I had that thought, my next reaction was, why? Why does this have to be negative?

It immediately reminded me of a girl, she’s not been my friend the longest, but it’s probably darn near close! In the past, her life has sometimes gone off track and she has needed me.  I’ve been beneficial to her life.  And the same is true the other direction, I’ve needed her, and she has been beneficial to my life.

But right now, we aren’t a benefit to each other.  Our lives are pretty good.

Yet, she still calls, and she still reaches out, and we still get together.

And that’s when it hit me.  Her true colors are showing.  I offer no benefit to her life, except my friendship.  She loves me for me and that is all she needs.  I don’t have to be useful to her, I just get to be.

I can’t tell you how amazing it was to have that revelation, that what I immediately saw as “lacking” was in fact a message exactly the opposite.  I just needed a new perspective on things!

And this happened a few days ago, but I just couldn’t get it out of my mind, so I had to come share it with y’all! What do you think? Do you have a perspective thought or revelation to share?

Wordless Wednesday: #NYGvsDAL

It’s that time of year again! My best buddy BA and I went to the Cowboys vs. New York Giants game this weekend, and boy, it was awesome!  And in case you missed it, SPOILER, we won!

A little pre-game tailgating action.

Rowdy came out to excite the crowd, and naturally, I had to get pictures for Mr. T

I sent these to Mr T with a note "one day, this could be you!" His response was "if only I liked football." :/

Yes, that's my BA.

Who, after an elbow to the ribs from me, fixed his face!

The game was so good that I failed to reach for my phone to take pictures until the 4th quarter.  That was when word floated down that Jay Novacek was in the suite.  If you don’t know anything else about football, just know that Jay Novacek is one of the best tight-ends that ever played and is a wonderful human being!

AND I GOT A PICTURE WITH HIM!!

AND I GOT A PICTURE WITH HIM!!

And even though BA told me to leave him be, guess who got a picture with him, too?

Uh huh, that's right. BA and Jay Novacek.

25 Songs in 25 Days – Day 11

25 Songs in 25 Days – Day 11 – A song on the soundtrack of your favorite movie.

Okay, you have to go with a selection from Grease for this one!

Tell me more, tell me more!

It was so hard to pick a song, but this one did eventually win, mainly because this song is the reason why I sometimes expect everyone around me to burst into song.

Okay, not going to lie, sometimes my friends and I do burst into song, but for some reason, no one else around us joins in, and our choreography isn’t as good… we may need to work on that!

Go burst into song on another site:

25 Songs in 25 Days – Day 6 – A song that reminds you of a best friend.

I can’t believe it took me to day 6 before Meatloaf showed up!  This song has always reminded me of BA, but even more so since we went to see him together!

This close! I was this close!!!

Sunshine Award

Thanks to Container Chronicles for giving me the Sunshine Award, which is an award given to bloggers who have been inspirational.

sunshine-award-1The rules are simple:

  1. Nominate 10 other bloggers.
  2. Give 11 facts about yourself.

Now for the hard part – coming up with 11 things to share with you!

1. Yesterday I got a text from Mr. T.

Wanna have lunch with me today?! I am in the mood for Taco Casa… I would love if you could bring me some.

How does a mom say no to that? 🙂 I love, love, love the fact that my teenager still enjoys spending time with his mom.  I love the fact that he enjoys when my hair is purple and isn’t embarrassed by it, and yes, I know that he really wanted Taco Casa (a really good fast food Mexican restaurant for those of you not lucky enough to have one!) but the fact that I got to come along with it was Awesome!

2. My friend Erica and I text pictures of our food to each other.  While it’s not normally a competition (usually it’s more of a validation “Look! I cooked!”), yesterday it turned into one.  She sent me a great shot of her lunch:

E lunch

And in return, I sent back this, with the caption “I win”.

lunch with Mr T

Her husband is contesting my “win” currently, but really, I don’t care how bad my bean burritos were compared to her bruschetta chicken, cause my teenage son invited me to sit with him at the table with four of his friends!

3. Here is the tweet that Mr. T sent out after I left.  (Mom, just skip this next part, it was funny in context, I swear it was!)

T tweets

Yes, my son’s Twitter handle is currently Master Sex Appeal.  Yes, he is making a duck face in the photo.  Yes, he’s wearing makeup.  But, we were practicing our Halloween make up that night, and then because it was so funny, we were making duck faces and taking selfies.

4. I cannot make a duck face.  I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but apparently the duck face selfie is not for me.  I heard all of you sighing in relief!  You thought I was going to subject you to a duck face selfie, didn’t you?

5.  When my son goes out of town, I tend to live on PB&J and cereal.  My friends tend to call and make sure I’ve had the PB&J and make sure I’m not just living on cereal.

6. My dad instilled in me a love of Science Fiction and I like to indulge as often as I can.

Star Trek predicting the future

7. You all know that when Dean Winchester comes to life he will be mine.  Mine I tell you! MINE!

Dean Winchester

8.  I found out today that one of my best friends and I have been friends for 29 years.  That makes me sound older than I really am!

9.  I have multiple ghost/haunted house related activities on my Bucket List.  I’m actually pretty sad that my house isn’t haunted.

10.  MeatLoaf is one of my favorite artists.  Seeing him in concert was a magical experience!

11.  I have a Lion King tattoo.  Sort of.  I have an infinity symbol with Hakuna Matata woven in, and I worked hard for that!  Hakuna Matata is Swahili and it really does mean “no worries”.

And now, 10 bloggers that have inspired me, both in the blogosphere and in real life:

  1. Surviving the Madhouse
  2. Winding Road
  3. Little Steps

And, now, in honor of Hakuna Matata, here are some bloopers from the movie:

It’s the End of the Year as we Know it!

Goodbye 2013 and Hello 2014.

I’m currently thinking about New Year’s Resolutions… I can’t wait to share them with you all!

Until then, I’ve decided to get on the band wagon and provide you with my Top 5 Blogs from the past year!  Whoo Hooo!  Lucky you!

Now, I do have a disclaimer.  I eliminated my very top blog as it has 2,000 more hits than the next one down… obviously not a fan favorite, just a search engine favorite!

A Supernatural Obsession

Nerd fandom

I think that this post is a hit because of the search terms; however, I’m super happy to include it because I like to share the love of the Winchester brothers.  You’re welcome.

The Bucket List

I did love this post.  Looking back, the formatting is off and I can tell that I have modified the way I blog just a bit; however, I’m really pleased that this one made the list!  I love my bucket list!

The Baby Shower Didn’t Suck

Really? You want to display and then eat a cake that is a baby's butt? Am I the only one that has issues with this??

Really, you want to display a cake that looks like a baby butt and then expect me to eat it.  Not happening.  And if you give me a part of the cake that looks like a human leg I will personally cut off your toes and see how YOU like it!  Okay, sorry, but baby showers can be freaky things and even just posting this brings up an irrational response apparently…

Now, this post still brings a tear to my eye.  In fact, I almost didn’t re-read this post, but I couldn’t help it.  Thanks to all of my fellow bloggers who followed me through this journey, you guys were there through the medical jargon, the laughter and the tears.  This is still my favorite post of all time.  And probably always will be.

What Does Being Brave Mean?

Bravery[3]

There are days that just making it through the day makes me feel brave.  I know that everyone has a different definition of “bravery”, and some of the items that I have trouble with you might be able to breeze right through; but the fact that I do them despite the fact that my heart is pounding out of my chest – well, I’ll take that as a win!

Thank you to those who have read my blogs, and many thanks to those of you that take the time to leave a comment.  I’ve really enjoyed meeting and interacting with all of you this past year – you’ve all brought laughter and light into my life.

Tattoos and Tears

I got my tattoo! And, it’s awesome!

Saturday afternoon I went with Karen to help her finish Christmas shopping.  This is the first year that she’s ever waited this long, and oh my goodness – I was amazed at how many people wait so long and are willing to face the crowds!!  It was insane! There were people everywhere!  And don’t even get me started on traffic!!

That’s not the point, but I felt the need to share!

Before we headed out, we had swung by a tattoo shop that was supposed to be open, but there was a sign on the door that they would be opening late.  (Fine!  Be that way! Can’t you tell I am dying to give you my money?) After several days hours of shopping  we were finally headed back.  Karen said it wasn’t out of the way to stop back by the shop – so we did!

I showed the lady what I was thinking and after working on the design for a few minutes her design matched my vision.  So, I rolled up my sleeve, sat down, and promptly burst into tears.

Karen offered to hold my hand.

I have the best friends!

The artist handed me a paper towel to mop up my face and she began.  I was worried at first because I was very clear this was a memorial tattoo and I needed someone who would respect that – and she seemed, well, dry.  I have an overabundance of personality and pretty much expect that in others – so a dry tattoo artist wasn’t first on my list.  But, as we sat there and talked and she worked, I finally saw a human side to her and when it was over and done with, I realized that she did a great job.  She engaged me in a good way and distracted me just enough that the waterworks didn’t flood the building and cause us to float out the front door.

I think we were in and out in under 30-45 minutes.  It didn’t take long at all; and now I have a beautiful piece of art on my forearm.  It is very simple, very elegant and exactly what I pictured.

Memorial tattoo

P.S. I woke up Sunday with what I thought was an eye infection, and after finally managing to get my contacts out, I called and got an appointment with the local Doc in a Box.  Scratched cornea.  Fortunately, not a rip or a tear, just a little scratch.  So, I’m confined to my glasses and have several different eye drops that I’m putting in every couple of hours.  Should be better by tomorrow – fingers crossed!

P.P.S. The Cowboys just suck.  There is no way to sugar coat it.  If I hadn’t already been crying due to my eye, the game would have had me in tears.  How do you blow a lead that big? How do you have such poor clock management skills? How do you have such poor play calling?  And, when did our head coach start pointing fingers? Really? Ugh.

P.P.P.S. If you missed the original post where I found my inspiration for the tattoo, you can find it here.
