Mommy Guilt – A Guest Post

I’m so excited!  Jess at Waiting on a Word was kind enough to host me as a guest blogger today!  Please go check her out!  It’s a pretty awesome post, if I do say so myself!

My life has been busy. I’m not saying it’s been harder than anyone’s, but just to point out that I’ve been busy! You know that kinda busy where when you get a free moment and you’re afraid that you’ve totally forgotten something you were supposed to do and that’s why all of the sudden you have free time!

The point of this is that today I went for my monthly pedicure. Several years ago I decided that the approximately $30 a month was worth having an hour alone. I don’t do a lot for just me as I am very family and friend focused; however, I love having my toes done. I love the feel and how pretty they look at the end of the hour. I love the massage chair and I love the foot rub that comes with it. I love that for one hour every month I don’t have to worry about anything. Everything will be waiting on me when the hour is up, so I can let it all go and just enjoy an hour of me time and a little pampering!

Okay – go visit Jess to finish the post!  It’s well worth it! (in my very humble opinion! 🙂 )

The Downfall of Halloween Candy in Texas

I know I have inundated you with Halloween lately; however, I’ve noticed something that I must share.

First off, chocolate is chocolate and I’m not complaining; but I gotta tell you this!

Secondly, most of you know that I live in Texas. Texas is hot, that’s no secret.

Now, let’s add up these two facts. Halloween candy/chocolate is sitting on our store shelves which means it was shipped in weeks ago. (Why is it that when goods are transported on a ship it is called cargo and when it goes via a truck it is called a shipment?) Anyway… the chocolate was shipped to us, in massive box trucks, that aren’t air conditioned.

So, when the rest of you open a Reese’s peanut butter pumpkin, it looks like a pumpkin. When you open a Hershey’s chocolate tombstone, it has detail, it has writing that you can make out.

Here is what I get when I open a chocolate:

Will Halloween Ever Get Here?

Halloween time

Seriously!  I’m ready! Well, after today I am ready!  My Amy came and spent most of the weekend with me, which means that I didn’t get everything on my to-do list done; however, the flip side of that is that the house will always need to be cleaned, but it’s fun having one of my best friends her and forcing here to go shopping and do craft projects with me – neither of which is in her top 10 list of favorite things to do!

We did get some shopping done and we had plenty of time to hang out and then it was time to get some crafts done.  I had texted her on Friday that she had to help, but that it wouldn’t be as bad as she expected – and it wasn’t!

Let’s start with the bouquet of flowers I’m working on.

flowers

Oh yeah – spooky eyeball flowers!  These are $0.97 flowers from Wal-Mart with plastic novelty eyeballs hot glued into the center.  They turned out so well that when I was at Target I picked up three more flowers and glued the eye balls in… and I have enough eyeballs left to pick up another three flowers!  The eye balls were left over from previous years where I used them a decorations, so that didn’t cost me anything- all I’m spending money on is the flowers themselves.  Cheap!  Cute!  My kinda craft!  The orange vase is on loan from my grandmother who, when she heard what I was doing told me she had the perfect vase, and she sure did!  It is going to look great on my table!

My next project came from a pin on Pinterest that lead me to The Designer Co-op.  You can read her post about the zombie birthday party she threw for her husband here. I showed you the project inspiration not that long ago but I am so jazzed at how it turned out for me!

Zombie 2

Zombies!!!  This one was more fun than I expected!  Please ignore the tape and hot glue gun still in the shot, but I was too excited once we were done to clean up before I started taking pictures!  I bought Mr. T a print from the store the other day and low and behold, the cardboard piece was the PERFECT size for my fireplace opening!  My grandmother came to my rescue again and provided several large pieces of cardboard for me.  My Amy and I sat down and traced our hands in fun shapes and then used an Exacto knife to cut them out.  I then cut two long pieces about 5″ wide to use as the “boards”.  Then we took everything outside and she spray painted the back board and hands black while I painted the cardboard boards brown and then drew on some nails, knot holes and grain with a sharpie marker.  Once everything was dry we brought everything back inside and did a dry fit of the hands, then put the back board and hands down and taped the hands in place.  Then she made tape circles and I used those to adhere the back board and hands to my fireplace.  Since the tape worked out so well, I had her make more circles (we were using thick packing tape) and attached the boards.  Now it looks like my fireplace has been boarded up to prevent the zombies from getting through!  I just love it!

On this up close shot you can see that the hands are coming out from behind the back board.  The Designer Co-op didn’t use a back board, but instead just had the black hands coming out; however, I have a beautiful candelabra currently inside my fireplace, and I didn’t want to have to remove that and store it somewhere, so the back board was just to block the view.  On another note – I love my bones in the firewood holder!

If you get the chance, I highly recommend both of these crafts – we had a blast putting them together and both were done in under an hour, from start to finish.

Is Halloween ever going to get here?

Bucket List: Fried Ice Cream

I love my bucket list!  If you’ve followed me for a bit, you are well aware of this, if you haven’t, well you can catch up HERE.

I’m excited to announce that I finally crossed this latest item off – it’s been driving me nuts!  Fried Ice Cream!  When did it become so hard to find?

Bert picked me up (for a lunch meeting) and we went downtown to a nice restaurant that, per Google, was supposed to have fried ice cream.  We were seated and I picked up my menu and immediately asked “Where’s the desserts?”  The waitress looked a bit taken a back and Bert started to laugh.  Really? I’m the very first person you’ve ever had that asked for the dessert menu before they ordered?  Other people need to get on the ball! How do you know what to order if you don’t know what you are saving room for?!?

Anyway, she brought me the dessert menu and my jaw hit the floor… “where is the fried ice cream?”  Oh, they don’t have it. “No, you don’t understand, Google says you do!”

UGH.

So, to comfort myself, I ordered a margarita.  And chicken fajitas.

As we were wrapping up lunch and were done discussing business, I looked at Bert and said “You know, I think we have to make a pit stop on the way home.  I know another place to try.”

And we did – it was just one block north of the freeway and there were two restaurants that it could have been.  We walked in the first one and struck out. I walked in the second one and then ran back to his truck and grabbed my purse and told him to get inside!

I took this pick of me and Bert so that you could see the fact that we are in an Asian restaurant. Well that and the fact that we are so good looking!

photo 2

You don’t expect to see this on the table at the place you are about to eat fried ice cream!

Oh my goodness… doesn’t that look yummy!

I got caught sneaking a pic of Bert enjoying a bite!

This was awesome!  I’m so glad I was able to cross it off my bucket list and even more importantly, I’m so glad that I have friends that are willing to help me out!

A Million Thanks!

Okay, I have so much going on – and not near enough time for all of it.

Work has exploded, which is good, as it pays my bills.  Personal life is still as small as ever, but super busy.

I have a friend coming to spend a couple of weeks with me next week, and I’m not prepared. At all.

I have a friend coming over Friday night… I’m not even prepared for that!

Mr. T wants to graduate a year early.  I’m so not ready for that, and in fact and am in denial.  Especially about the money I have to find to support the extra classes he has to take off campus in order to accomplish this!

Let me go water my money tree in the back yard :/

The holidays are almost here – are you kidding me? 11 Saturdays until Christmas.  11.  You heard me.  11.

I crossed something my Bucket List today – but it’s too fun not to devote an entire blog to it, so you have to wait for that, I want to be able to do it justice!

Oh! And I won a contest and got a free book!

But… as I’ve been working on my Random Acts of Kindness, I ran across this blog today from my pal at Being a Lady is Overrated.  Now, normally I’d just reblog it from her site, but I had other stuff to tell you about, too – so um, Lady, forgive me, but I’m doing a copy/paste because I’m super excited about it!

I plan to take cards to my family Thanksgiving dinner and invite my entire family to participate (I won’t force them too, but you can bet I will tell you who doesn’t!!!) 🙂  Hi mom!  I wouldn’t really do that.  Okay, I would.  Who am I kidding?

Go visit and give a follow to Being a Lady is Overrated and then join me and Lady and Pickles (I have to catch up on my nicknames – that could be her wonderful son or another friend… I can’t keep it all straight right now!) and send a Thank You to our military troops!

In light of the current state of my life, I’m finding myself in need of distractions. So I’ve been thinking of productive or good things to spend my time on instead of wasting it watching TV or something.

Well I’ve found it!! Pickle and I are beginning a letter writing campaign. We will be writing letters and making cards for all the brave men and women who are serving in our military.

I found this organization where you can send them generic letters and cards. Then they distribute them to our military members severing at home, abroad, retired and injured.

Feeling motivated and happy today! Can’t wait to get started.

I can’t wait either Lady, and thank you so much for sharing your journey and doing positive things to help you get through.  Great inspiration!  And yes, I’ll send back the next couple of Supernatural seasons with my Amy this weekend.  This part wasn’t necessary, but I can’t go a day without mentioning it!

Speaking of!! Today’s Daily Prompt is all about Addiction… and you know I want to write a post about Supernatural… can I write the post even if it’s after the prompt has passed?  Ack!  I need more time in the day!!

Thank Goodness I Don’t Have To Be Exact

I am addicted to my freezer cooking.  This weekend I bought a bulk package of boneless pork chops that were on sale and then I read Ortsofsorts blog: Carolina Pulled Pork recipe.  As I was thinking about dinner yesterday, I thought  “I can do that!”.

So at lunch time I pulled out my crock pot and a big ziplock bag.  I proceeded to make up one for dinner and one to freeze for later.  I was salting and peppering and dug out my paprika.  Added extra brown sugar and cheated on the vinegar.  And then I pulled the ketchup out of the fridge.

It was like a nightmare.  I was all but out of ketchup!! I don’t run out of ketchup.  I pulled out my little stool and peered at the top of the pantry and found my back up mayo, my back up mustard, relish, BBQ sauce, honey, creamer, any condiment you can come up with I have it – except my ketchup!!!!

Now I was in a conundrum.  I’d already added the brown sugar and vinegar.  What to do. What to do.

Lightbulb

I grabbed both meals and took them to the sink and dumped out most of the vinegar, grabbed a bottle of BBQ sauce and dumped half in one meal and half in the other!

Thank goodness I don’t have to be exact when I cook! Instead of making the sauce while the pork chops cooked I’ll just use pre-made sauce and let that reduce down!

Makes me really happy I watch the Food Network!  🙂

I had a couple hours after work before I had to pick up Mr. T, so I went to run a couple of errands, only to get a text from him that rehearsal was cancelled and he was riding the bus home.  Ugh.  My son doesn’t carry his house key.  I’m home 90% of the time and when I’m not, usually we know in advance and he takes his key.  I told him that I had just left and to use our secret entrance.

secret entrance

You don’t have to tunnel to get to the secret entrance, but close – I mean, otherwise, what’s the point of a secret entrance?

I ran only one errand and then swung by the house and picked him up so he could get some drive time in and we ran the other errands, one of which included finding a place that sold coleslaw.  I didn’t want to go into Wal-Mart, or any other store, but Chicken Express came to our rescue!  One quick stop in the drive-thru (and as long as we were there we had to get a couple of sweet teas) and we were on our way back home.

The pork chops had the house smelling great, and I took a fork and tongs and just shredded it in the crock pot and T pulled out some plates.  We both decided that open faced sandwiches would be the way to go, so I open a bun, piled on the pulled pork and topped it with a heaping of coleslaw.

Yummy!!

I love when mistakes taste good!  Now I just have to go get some ketchup!!

And – guess what day it is?  It’s Supernatural Tuesday!!  The start of Season 9 is tonight and I’m beyond excited!!

Cowboys vs Broncos OR How I Lost My Voice

This weekend was one of my best!  It definitely goes in the memory jar!

Saturday Mr. T and I did the yard work and ran some errands and Mr. T goes “I’ve had fun spending the day with you.”  Wow, talk about my heart overflowing!  Later in the evening we spent some time with the rest of the family.  Sunday we got up and my sister and her four kids joined us at church.  Mr. T and I had lunch and then the fun began!!

BA picked me up at 2 and we headed to the stadium for the Cowboy v Bronco game!!

Traffic was horrible!  The game had to be sold out based on the traffic we were wading through, and then when we finally got to our parking area – it was full! They had overbooked.  We managed to make up our own parking space and headed up to the suite.

BA and I waiting for the elevator. Yes, my hair is purple.

I got there just in time to see the Cowboys score!  BA and I got our seats and a few plays later he grabbed us some drinks and I fixed us a plate to share.  The food at the stadium is so much better than you would expect!  I love the macaroni and cheese… it would cost me a fortune to try and make it at home, so I make sure to get my fill when I’m there!

Real view from our seats.

See this head in the ball cap, it becomes important later on! This is your teaser!

Can you see how big that screen is?!? I know that I comment about it every time I write this post, but still! It’s huge!

We were behind in the 2nd quarter, and it was tough.  It was so cool to watch Peyton Manning play, though, not going to lie, I was really excited about this game just so I could see his performance.  And he didn’t disappoint – did you see that Quarterback sneak?!?  No one was expecting that!!

At half time, BA and I did go move his truck to a real spot.  We figured at least one person would leave, and they did!

Had to get a close up, as requested by Mr. T!

We were into the 3rd quarter and I couldn’t wait anymore.  Remember that baseball capped gentleman from earlier in the blog?  Well, that was Stoney LaRue.

If you live outside Texas, you probably have never heard of him – and well, based on my Facebook comments, there are plenty of people here who haven’t heard of him.  He is one of the best voices in Texas County.  I’ve been in love with his music for years, and it was all I could do not to totally fan girl, but I calmly got up when he got up to refill his plate and drink and told him that I apologize, and don’t want to disrupt him watching the game, but could I please get a pick?  He was so flippin’ awesome!  I had talked to his wife earlier, we bonded over the buffet selections (and by the way, she is gorgeous!) and she was super sweet – but he blew me away.  Such a gentleman!!

Forgive my goofy smile, but really, it was all I could do not to jump up and down and hug all over him!

Image

My throat is a little sore today, and I do have a voice, but it is a bit scratchy! But it was a great game and there is nothing like watching it with others that jump up and down and scream with you!  And I was up and down and yelling and high fiving everyone in the booth… until the very end.  We may have caused Peyton’s very first interception of the year; however, the one that Romo threw just broke my heart.

Sometimes the loss is so much more painful after a great game! Both the Cowboys and the Broncos played a great game, it was so exciting and I am so blessed that I was able to be there to watch it in person – but oh my goodness… my Cowboys are just heart breakers!!
